| News Archive | The Press-Enterprise, April 25, 2007 Tykes On Their Trikes By Jennifer Whitaker/The Press-Enterprise MORENO VALLEY Students at Jan Peterson Child Development Center in Moreno Valley will end a week of tricycle-safety lessons Friday with a trike-a-thon fundraiser and a session about helping others. Proceeds will go to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. The center's assistant director, Pam Charron, said the goal of the fundraiser is to help St. Jude in its fight against childhood catastrophic diseases and, through example, teach children to reach out to help others.
Charron, who is in charge of the trike-a-thon, said the most important thing about the event is "helping children to have empathy for others. And learning that they can also help. And that it's important to help others when they need it." The center's 130 toddlers and preschoolers have been gearing up for the event with a week-long safety training, which includes the teachers and parents. The children, who have been collecting donations, will bring their own tricycles and bikes and demonstrate the safety rules at the fundraiser. This is the center's third year participating in the hospital's trike-a-thon. The first year, the center raised $600. Last year, it took in more than $1,000. "We're hoping to go up from there this year," Charron said. The week-long trike-a-thon fundraiser for St. Jude has been held at thousands of child care centers year-round for more than 20 years.
